Storks

Prekmurje was for a long time the region of Slovenia known for its numerous storks’ nests. Unfortunately these are threatened by intensive farming, the disappearance of grasslands and increasingly dry years. Today storks are found more frequently in other parts of Slovenia. In Prekmurje the masculine form of the name – štrk – is used for this great migratory bird and it appears as a trademark on many local products. Velika Polana and Mala Polana are home to the largest number of white storks’ nests in Slovenia and together have been designated a European Stork Village.
