Lajos Markovics was a Croatian parish priest, born in Felsőberkifalu in Vas County, a settlement formerly inhabited by Croatians. He was ordained a priest in Szombathely on June 16, 1935. He became a chaplain in Apátistvánfalva, where he served as parish priest until his death, and is buried there. In 1975 he became a titular dean. He learned the local Slovenian dialect. He held masses and religious lessons in Slovenian. Together with the Slovenian parish priest of Felsőszölnök, János Kühár, he has worked hard throughout his life to preserve the Slovenian Rába Region’s language and national identity. In 2018, his memorial plaque was unveiled in the church.
