Crucifixion from Sv. Jurij

Sculpture

unknown artist

17th century (?)

Sculpture of Jesus crucified. The body is nailed to the cross with three nails. There is a loin cloth around his loins and a wound on his torso with thick drops of blood. Wounds and martyrdom are clearly visible on his face, hands, and feet, all are full of bruises and drops of blood. The face is drawn, very expressive, the cheeks sunken, his head is tilted slightly to the right and adorned with a crown, made of thorns, and hair is softly falling to the shoulders of the dead Saviour. This quality work by an unknown sculptor was brought to the High Gothic church near Sv. Jurij by aristocratic patrons, probably the Széchy’s from Gornja Lendava.
